When Moses was up on Mt. Sinai getting the Ten Commandments, the people down below became impatient. They began to doubt that Moses would ever return or that the Lord would be with them. So they made a statue of a golden calf and began to worship it. We do something similar when the Lord feels distant or irrelevant to our own lives: we craft something else in his place, something that will justify us being able to do whatever we want. Although this feels like freedom, it actually leads to spiritual harm and slavery.
