The book of Numbers gave meticulous instructions for how the Children of Israel were to arrange their encampment. The Tabernacle was to be situated in the centre with specific tribes assigned to each side; each tribe camped according to smaller subsets and family units. On the surface this seems to be little more than a historical footnote. But when we understand that each tribe represents some spiritual quality, the arrangement of the camp becomes a detailed picture of how we orientate ourselves and our lives towards the Lord.
